Read the Story

Jesus told a story about a king who made a wedding feast for his son. The guests he invited would not come. So the king sent his servants to invite everyone they could find on the roads. The wedding hall was filled with guests. God invites all people to His Kingdom.

Some men tried to trap Jesus. They asked if they should pay taxes to Caesar. Jesus asked whose picture was on a coin. They said, "Caesar's." Jesus said, "Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

A teacher of the law asked which command was greatest. Jesus said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." He said the second is to love your neighbor as yourself.

Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’

Love Is the Center

Read and Think

Jesus told a parable of a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son. The invited guests made excuses and refused to come. The king sent his servants into the streets to gather everyone they found, both bad and good, until the hall was filled. One man came without wedding clothes and was put out. God's invitation is wide open, but we must come on His terms.

The Pharisees and Herodians tried to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. Jesus asked for a coin and asked whose image was on it. "Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." The Sadducees, who denied the resurrection, asked a tricky question about marriage in heaven. Jesus said they did not know the Scriptures or the power of God.

Finally, a lawyer asked which commandment is greatest. Jesus answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." He said the second is like it: love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two.

Matthew 22 · Grade 5

Whose Image?

Name Date

Read and Think

The parable of the wedding feast continues Jesus' warnings to Israel's leaders. Those first invited, like the leaders, refused the king's invitation and even mistreated his servants. The invitation then went out to the streets, to outsiders and sinners. The guest without a wedding garment shows that accepting God's invitation means being clothed in the righteousness He provides. Many are called, but few are chosen.

Three groups tried to trap Jesus. The Pharisees and Herodians asked about taxes, hoping He would either anger Rome or the people. Jesus' answer went deeper: the coin bears Caesar's image, but people bear God's image, so we owe ourselves wholly to God. The Sadducees mocked the resurrection, but Jesus quoted God's words to Moses, "I am the God of Abraham," showing that God is the God of the living.

The lawyer's question let Jesus summarize all of Scripture: wholehearted love for God and love for neighbor. Then Jesus asked His own question: whose son is the Christ? David himself called the Messiah "Lord" in Psalm 110. The Christ is David's son and also David's Lord. After that, no one dared ask Him any more questions.

  1. What does the guest without a wedding garment represent?

  3. How did Jesus' answer about the coin point deeper?

  4. How did Jesus prove the resurrection to the Sadducees?

  5. What did Jesus show from Psalm 110 about the Christ?
