Read and Think

The parable of the wedding feast continues Jesus' warnings to Israel's leaders. Those first invited, like the leaders, refused the king's invitation and even mistreated his servants. The invitation then went out to the streets, to outsiders and sinners. The guest without a wedding garment shows that accepting God's invitation means being clothed in the righteousness He provides. Many are called, but few are chosen.

Three groups tried to trap Jesus. The Pharisees and Herodians asked about taxes, hoping He would either anger Rome or the people. Jesus' answer went deeper: the coin bears Caesar's image, but people bear God's image, so we owe ourselves wholly to God. The Sadducees mocked the resurrection, but Jesus quoted God's words to Moses, "I am the God of Abraham," showing that God is the God of the living.

The lawyer's question let Jesus summarize all of Scripture: wholehearted love for God and love for neighbor. Then Jesus asked His own question: whose son is the Christ? David himself called the Messiah "Lord" in Psalm 110. The Christ is David's son and also David's Lord. After that, no one dared ask Him any more questions.
