A House of Prayer

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, just as the prophet said: "behold, your King comes to you, humble, and riding on a donkey." Crowds spread coats and branches on the road and shouted, "Hosanna to the son of David!"

Jesus went into the temple. People were buying and selling there. Jesus turned over their tables. He said that Scripture calls God's house a house of prayer, but they had made it a den of robbers. Then blind and lame people came to Him, and He healed them. Children shouted, "Hosanna!"

The next morning Jesus taught His disciples about faith. He said, "All things, whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive." Later He told stories that warned the leaders, who did not believe in Him.

Memory Verse

He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers!”

Matthew 21 · Grade 4

Behold, Your King

Name Date

Read and Think

As Jesus came near Jerusalem, He sent two disciples to bring a donkey and her colt. This fulfilled Zechariah's prophecy: "Tell the daughter of Zion, behold, your King comes to you, humble, and riding on a donkey." Crowds spread their garments and branches on the road and shouted, "Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" The whole city asked, "Who is this?"

Jesus entered the temple and drove out those who bought and sold, overturning the tables of the money changers. He quoted Scripture: God's house is a house of prayer. Blind and lame people came, and He healed them. Children cried out praise, and Jesus said God had prepared praise from the mouths of children.

The chief priests and elders asked by what authority He did these things. Jesus told two parables. In one, a son said no to his father but later obeyed, while the other said yes but did not go. In the other, tenants of a vineyard beat the owner's servants and killed his son. Jesus warned that the leaders were rejecting God's Son, the stone the builders rejected.

  1. What prophecy did Jesus fulfill by riding a donkey?

  2. What did the crowds shout?

  3. What did Jesus say God's house should be called?

Think About It

  1. The crowd shouted Hosanna, which means save us. How is Jesus a different kind of King than they expected?

  2. Jesus cleared the temple so it could be a house of prayer. What might need clearing out to make room for prayer in your life?

Memory Verse

“Tell the daughter of Zion, behold, your King comes to you, humble, and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

Matthew 21 · Grade 5

The Rejected Stone

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 21 opens the final week of Jesus' earthly ministry. His entry into Jerusalem is a royal arrival. By riding a donkey, He fulfills Zechariah 9:9 and presents Himself as Israel's humble, peaceful King. The crowds use words from Psalm 118, a psalm of pilgrims, to hail Him as the son of David.

His actions in the temple are prophetic. Overturning the money changers' tables, He cites Isaiah and Jeremiah: the house meant for prayer for all nations had become a den of robbers. Cursing the fruitless fig tree illustrates judgment on outward religion that bears no fruit, and it becomes a lesson in faith-filled prayer.

When the leaders challenge His authority, Jesus asks about John's baptism and exposes their unwillingness to commit. Two parables follow. The son who first refused but then obeyed represents tax collectors and sinners who repented; the son who said yes but did not go represents the leaders. In the parable of the wicked tenants, the owner finally sends his son, whom they kill. Quoting Psalm 118, Jesus says the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

Show What You Know

  1. What does riding a donkey reveal about the kind of King Jesus is?

  2. What do the temple-clearing and fig tree have in common?

  3. Why did Jesus ask the leaders about John's baptism?

  4. Whom do the two sons represent?

  5. Who is the stone the builders rejected?
