The Greatest Serves

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus told a story. A man hired workers for his vineyard early in the morning. He hired more workers later in the day, and some only one hour before the end. At night he paid every worker the same. The first workers grumbled. But the owner said he was being generous. God's grace is a gift, not a paycheck.

The mother of James and John asked Jesus to let her sons sit at His right and left in His Kingdom. The other disciples were upset. Jesus said that among them, whoever wants to be great must serve. He said, "The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

As Jesus left Jericho, two blind men cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, you son of David!" Jesus had compassion. He touched their eyes, and they could see. They followed Him.

Memory Verse

even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Matthew 20 · Grade 4

Grace and Greatness

Name Date

Read and Think

Jesus told a parable about a landowner who hired workers for his vineyard at dawn, mid-morning, noon, mid-afternoon and the last hour of the day. When evening came, everyone received a denarius, a full day's wage. Those hired first complained. The owner answered that he had done them no wrong; he was free to be generous. So the last will be first, and the first last.

On the road to Jerusalem, Jesus told the Twelve for the third time that He would be handed over, condemned, mocked and crucified, and that on the third day He would be raised.

Right after this, James and John's mother asked for the best seats in the Kingdom for her sons. Jesus said the rulers of the nations lord it over people, but it shall not be so among His followers. Whoever wants to be great must be a servant, "even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Then He showed that servant heart by stopping to heal two blind men.

Matthew 20 · Grade 5

A Ransom for Many

Name Date

Read and Think

The parable of the laborers in the vineyard answers Peter's question from chapter 19 about reward. God's Kingdom does not run on merit. The workers hired at the eleventh hour received the same as those who worked all day, not because they earned it but because the owner was generous. Grumbling exposed the hearts of those who thought they deserved more. Grace is never earned, so it cannot be compared.

Jesus' third passion prediction is the most detailed: He will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, condemned to death, handed to the Gentiles to be mocked, flogged and crucified, and raised on the third day. The disciples still did not understand, as shown by the request for thrones on His right and left. Jesus asked if they could drink His cup, the cup of suffering.

Jesus redefined leadership. Gentile rulers dominate, but His followers serve, because the Son of Man came to give His life as a ransom for many. A ransom is a price paid to set captives free. Jesus' death would pay to free us from sin. Then, outside Jericho, two blind beggars called Him "son of David," and Jesus, moved with compassion, opened their eyes. Unlike the disciples, they saw clearly who He was.

Show What You Know

  1. What does the parable of the vineyard teach about God's Kingdom and merit?

  2. What did Jesus mean by drink the cup?

  3. What is a ransom, and how does it describe Jesus' death?

  4. How did Jesus redefine leadership?

  5. How do the blind men contrast with the disciples in this chapter?
