Matthew 19 · Grade 4

Treasure in Heaven

Name Date

Read and Think

Some Pharisees tested Jesus with a question about divorce. Jesus pointed them back to creation: God made them male and female, and the two become one flesh. What God has joined together, no one should separate. Marriage is God's good design.

Parents brought children to Jesus to be blessed, and the disciples scolded them. Jesus said, "Allow the little children, and don't forbid them to come to me; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these." He laid His hands on them.

A rich young man asked what good thing he must do to have eternal life. He claimed to keep the commandments, but Jesus saw his heart. "Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." The man went away sad. Jesus explained that riches can keep people from the Kingdom, but with God all things are possible. Those who leave things behind for Jesus will receive much more and inherit eternal life.

  2. How did Jesus respond to the children?

Matthew 19 · Grade 5

The First Will Be Last

Name Date

Read and Think

As Jesus journeys toward Jerusalem, Matthew 19 shows the values of the Kingdom turning the world's values upside down. The Pharisees wanted to debate legal reasons for divorce. Jesus pointed to God's original design: one man and one woman joined by God for life. Moses permitted divorce because of hard hearts, but it was not so from the beginning.

The disciples saw children as an interruption. Jesus saw them as models of Kingdom faith, those who receive as gifts what they cannot earn. The rich young man, by contrast, asked what he must do. He thought he had kept every command, yet when Jesus called him to give up his wealth and follow, he revealed that his possessions had first place in his heart.

Jesus' saying about a camel going through the eye of a needle shocked the disciples, who assumed wealth meant God's favor. Salvation is humanly impossible, but with God all things are possible. Peter noted they had left everything. Jesus promised that everyone who leaves home or family for His name will receive a hundred times as much and inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

Show What You Know

  1. What reason did Jesus give for why Moses permitted divorce?

  2. What do children model about receiving the Kingdom?

  3. What did the rich young man's response reveal?

  4. Why were the disciples shocked by the camel and needle saying?

  5. What did Jesus promise those who leave things for His name?
