Matthew 19 · Grade 5
The First Will Be Last
Read and Think
As Jesus journeys toward Jerusalem, Matthew 19 shows the values of the Kingdom turning the world's values upside down. The Pharisees wanted to debate legal reasons for divorce. Jesus pointed to God's original design: one man and one woman joined by God for life. Moses permitted divorce because of hard hearts, but it was not so from the beginning.
The disciples saw children as an interruption. Jesus saw them as models of Kingdom faith, those who receive as gifts what they cannot earn. The rich young man, by contrast, asked what he must do. He thought he had kept every command, yet when Jesus called him to give up his wealth and follow, he revealed that his possessions had first place in his heart.
Jesus' saying about a camel going through the eye of a needle shocked the disciples, who assumed wealth meant God's favor. Salvation is humanly impossible, but with God all things are possible. Peter noted they had left everything. Jesus promised that everyone who leaves home or family for His name will receive a hundred times as much and inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
