Read the Story

Jesus' disciples asked who is the greatest. Jesus called a little child to Him. He said we must be humble like little children.

Then Jesus told a story. A man had one hundred sheep. One sheep got lost. The man left the ninety-nine sheep and went to look for the lost one.

When he found it, he was so happy! Jesus said God does not want even one little one to be lost. God loves each one of us.

Forgive Again and Again

Name Date

Read the Story

The disciples asked Jesus who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus set a little child among them. He said that whoever humbles himself like this little child is the greatest. Jesus warned us not to lead little ones into sin.

Jesus told about a shepherd with a hundred sheep. If one goes astray, he leaves the ninety-nine to look for it. He rejoices more over that one than over the ninety-nine. The Father does not want one of these little ones to be lost.

Peter asked, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Until seven times?" Jesus said, "I don't tell you until seven times, but, until seventy times seven." Then He told a story. A servant was forgiven a huge debt. But he would not forgive a small one. God wants us to forgive from our hearts. He has forgiven us so much.

Memory Verse

Matthew 18 · Grade 4

Humble, Seeking, Forgiving

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 18 is the fourth teaching section in Matthew, and it is about life together in God's family. When the disciples asked who was greatest, Jesus placed a child in the middle of them. Unless you turn and become as little children, you will not enter the Kingdom. Greatness in God's eyes is humility and trust.

Jesus takes sin seriously. It would be better to have a heavy stone around your neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. Yet God's heart is to rescue. Like a shepherd who leaves ninety-nine sheep to find one that wandered, the Father does not want any little one to be lost. When a brother sins against you, go and talk to him privately and try to win him back.

Peter asked if forgiving seven times was enough. Jesus answered, "until seventy times seven." In His parable, a king forgave a servant an enormous debt. That servant then threw a fellow servant into prison over a small debt. The king was angry. Those who have received great mercy must show mercy and forgive from the heart.

Matthew 18 · Grade 5

The Community of the Forgiven

Name Date

Read and Think

In Matthew 18 Jesus teaches how His followers should live together. Greatness in the Kingdom belongs to the humble, not the powerful. Welcoming a child in Jesus' name is welcoming Him. Because the "little ones" matter so much to the Father, whose angels always see His face, Jesus gives strong warnings about causing others to stumble and urges radical seriousness about our own sin.

The parable of the lost sheep shows the Father's seeking love. Then Jesus outlines how to handle sin in the church: first go privately; if the person will not listen, take one or two others; if he still refuses, tell the assembly. The goal is always restoration, to have "gained back your brother." Jesus promises His presence: where two or three are gathered in His name, He is in their midst.

Peter's question about forgiving seven times leads to the parable of the unforgiving servant. The first servant owed ten thousand talents, a debt impossible to repay, and the king forgave it all. The servant then choked a fellow servant over a hundred denarii. The point is clear: our sin against God is a debt far greater than any wrong done to us. Those who have been forgiven must forgive.

  1. Why must we be careful not to cause little ones to stumble?

  2. List the steps Jesus gave for when a brother sins.

  3. What is the goal of confronting someone who sinned?

  4. What promise did Jesus make about gathering in His name?
