Glory on the Mountain

Name Date

Read the Story

Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James and John up a high mountain. He was transfigured, which means He was changed so they could see His glory. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as light. Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Him.

Peter offered to make three tents. While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him." The disciples fell on their faces, afraid. Jesus touched them and said, "Get up, and don't be afraid."

At the bottom of the mountain, a father begged Jesus to heal his son, because the disciples could not. Jesus healed the boy. He told the disciples that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed, nothing would be impossible for them. Later Jesus told Peter he would find a coin in a fish's mouth to pay the temple tax, and it happened just as Jesus said.

Memory Verse

While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.”

A Glimpse of Glory

Name Date

Read and Think

Six days after Peter's confession, Jesus led Peter, James and John up a high mountain. There He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun and His clothes became as white as the light. Moses, who gave the Law, and Elijah, the great prophet, appeared and spoke with Him.

Peter, not knowing what to say, offered to build three tents. A bright cloud overshadowed them, and the Father spoke: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him." The disciples fell down terrified, but Jesus touched them and said, "Get up, and don't be afraid." When they looked up, they saw only Jesus.

Coming down, they met a desperate father whose son suffered terribly. The disciples had not been able to help, but Jesus healed the boy at once. He told them the problem was their little faith; faith even as small as a mustard seed can move mountains, because the power is God's. Jesus again predicted His death and resurrection, and the disciples were very sad.

  2. What did the Father command the disciples?

Matthew 17 · Grade 5

Listen to Him

Name Date

Read and Think

The transfiguration gave three disciples a preview of Jesus' glory before His suffering. On the mountain, Jesus' hidden divine glory shone through. Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets, spoke with Him; all of Scripture points to Jesus. The bright cloud recalls God's glory-cloud in the wilderness and at the tabernacle.

The Father repeated the words spoken at Jesus' baptism and added, "Listen to him." Jesus is the Prophet like Moses whom God promised, and He is greater than Moses and Elijah. On the way down, the disciples asked about Elijah coming first. Jesus explained that John the Baptist had come in Elijah's role, and that the Son of Man would also suffer.

The glory of the mountain met the trouble of the valley. A father knelt for his son, whom the disciples could not help. Jesus rebuked the demon and the boy was healed. Faith as small as a mustard seed is enough because it trusts the great God. The chapter ends with the temple tax. As God's Son, Jesus was free from paying it, yet He paid it to avoid offense, providing a coin miraculously from a fish's mouth.

  1. What did the transfiguration reveal to the disciples?

  2. What does the presence of Moses and Elijah suggest?
