The Most Important Question

Name Date

Read and Think

The Pharisees and Sadducees, usually rivals, joined to test Jesus by demanding a sign from heaven. Jesus said they could read the weather in the sky but not the signs of the times. No sign would be given except the sign of Jonah. He warned His disciples about the yeast of these leaders, their teaching that spreads like yeast through dough.

At Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked who people said He was. Some said John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or a prophet. Then He asked the most important question anyone can answer: "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus said the Father had revealed this, and on this rock He would build His church.

From then on, Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, suffer, be killed, and be raised on the third day. Peter rebuked Him, but Jesus said Peter was thinking the way people think, not the way God thinks. Following Jesus means denying ourselves and taking up our cross. "What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life?"
