What Comes From the Heart

Name Date

Read the Story

Some Pharisees asked why Jesus' disciples did not wash their hands the special way their tradition said. Jesus answered that they were breaking God's commands to keep their own rules. He quoted Isaiah: these people honor God with their lips. But their heart is far from Him.

Jesus taught that food going into the mouth does not make a person unclean. What comes out of the heart does, like evil thoughts, lying and unkind words. God cares most about our hearts.

A Canaanite woman, who was not Jewish, begged Jesus to heal her daughter. She kept asking with humble faith. Jesus said, "Woman, great is your faith!" and her daughter was healed. Then Jesus healed many people on a mountain and fed four thousand men, besides women and children, with seven loaves and a few small fish.

Memory Verse

“‘These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

Lips and Hearts

Name Date

Read and Think

Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem. They accused Jesus' disciples of breaking the elders' tradition, because they did not wash their hands before eating. Jesus turned the question around. Their rule let people avoid caring for their parents. So their tradition cancelled God's command to honor father and mother.

Jesus quoted Isaiah: "These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me." Then He explained that what enters the mouth goes into the stomach, but what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart. Evil thoughts and evil deeds come from the heart. They make a person unclean.

In the region of Tyre and Sidon, a Canaanite woman cried, "Have mercy on me, Lord, you son of David!" She humbly kept asking, saying even the dogs eat crumbs from their masters' table. Jesus answered, "Woman, great is your faith!" Her daughter was healed from that hour. Later, Jesus healed great crowds and fed four thousand with seven loaves and a few fish.

Show What You Know

  1. How had the Pharisees' tradition cancelled God's command?

  2. What did Isaiah say about people's lips and hearts?

  3. Where do evil thoughts and actions come from, according to Jesus?

  4. What did the Canaanite woman's answer about crumbs show?

Think About It

  1. Is it possible to say the right things about God while our hearts are far from Him? How can we guard our hearts?

  2. The Canaanite woman kept asking. What does her example teach you about prayer?

Memory Verse

“But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the man.”

Matthew 15 · Grade 5

Mercy for Outsiders

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 15 deals with what truly makes a person clean before God. The religious leaders focused on outward washing rules handed down by tradition. Jesus showed that their traditions sometimes overruled God's Word, and He called them hypocrites who honored God with their lips while their hearts were far away.

Jesus taught the crowd that defilement comes from within. The real problem is not dirty hands but sinful hearts. This prepares us for the gospel: we need more than better habits; we need new hearts that only God can give. Jesus even said every plant His Father had not planted would be uprooted, and that the Pharisees were blind guides.

Then Jesus traveled to Gentile territory. A Canaanite woman, from a people long counted as Israel's enemies, called Him "son of David" and pleaded for her daughter. Jesus at first said He was sent to the lost sheep of Israel, but her humble, persistent faith shone, and He healed her daughter. Afterward He fed four thousand in a mostly Gentile region, a sign that the bread of the Kingdom is for all nations.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the Pharisees focus on, and what did Jesus focus on?

  2. Why did Jesus call the Pharisees hypocrites?

  3. How does this chapter show our need for new hearts?

  4. What was surprising about the Canaanite woman calling Jesus son of David?

  5. What does the feeding of the four thousand in Gentile territory suggest?
