Take Courage!

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus went to a quiet place, but the crowds followed. He had compassion on them and healed their sick. In the evening, His disciples said to send the people away to buy food. Jesus said, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat." They had only five loaves and two fish. Jesus blessed and broke the bread, and about five thousand men, besides women and children, ate and were filled.

Then Jesus sent the disciples ahead in the boat while He went up the mountain to pray. In the night, the wind and waves tossed the boat. Jesus came to them, walking on the sea! The disciples were afraid. Jesus said, "Cheer up! It is I! Don't be afraid."

Peter said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters." Jesus said, "Come!" Peter walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and began to sink. "Lord, save me!" he cried. Jesus caught him. When they got into the boat, the wind stopped, and the disciples worshiped Jesus, saying, "You are truly the Son of God!"

Memory Verse

Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Matthew 14 · Grade 4

Eyes on Jesus

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 14 begins with sad news. King Herod had put John the Baptist in prison for speaking the truth, and John was killed. When Jesus heard, He went by boat to a quiet place. But the crowds followed on foot. Instead of sending them away, Jesus had compassion and healed their sick.

As evening came, the disciples wanted to send the crowds away to buy food. Jesus said, "You give them something to eat." They had only five loaves and two fish. Jesus looked up to heaven, blessed, broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to hand out. Everyone ate and was filled, and twelve baskets of leftovers were collected.

That night, the disciples struggled in the boat against the wind. Jesus came walking on the sea. Peter asked to come to Him and walked on the water, but when he looked at the strong wind, he began to sink. Jesus immediately took hold of him and asked, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" Those in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are truly the Son of God!"

Matthew 14 · Grade 5

The Shepherd Who Provides

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 14 contrasts two kings and two feasts. King Herod, at a birthday banquet full of pride, made a foolish oath and had John the Baptist killed. Jesus, the true King, hosted a meal in the wilderness out of compassion, and He fed the hungry.

The feeding of the five thousand recalls God feeding Israel with manna in the wilderness and points ahead to the Last Supper: Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it. He involved His disciples: "You give them something to eat." They learned that what they lacked, He would supply. The twelve baskets left over showed that His provision overflows.

Walking on the sea reveals even more. In the Old Testament, God alone treads on the waves of the sea. When Jesus says, "It is I," He uses words that echo God's name, "I AM." Peter's brief walk shows both faith and fear. Even when he doubted, Jesus saved him. The episode ends with worship: "You are truly the Son of God!" Back on shore, all who touched the fringe of His garment were made whole.

Show What You Know

  1. How do Herod's banquet and Jesus' meal contrast?

  2. What Old Testament event does the feeding of the five thousand recall?

  3. What future event does Jesus' taking, blessing and breaking bread point to?

  5. How did Jesus respond when Peter doubted?
