A Day to Do Good

Name Date

Read the Story

The Sabbath was a special day of rest. One Sabbath, Jesus saw a man whose hand was hurt. Some leaders wanted to see if Jesus would heal him.

Jesus said that if a sheep fell into a pit, they would lift it out. A person is worth much more than a sheep! It is good to help on the Sabbath.

Jesus said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." The man stretched it out, and it was healed! Jesus loves to do good.

Memory Verse

Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath day.”

Matthew 12 · Grade 3

Greater Than Jonah

Name Date

Read the Story

One Sabbath, Jesus' disciples were hungry and picked some grain to eat. The Pharisees said this broke the Sabbath rules. Jesus said that God desires mercy, and that He, the Son of Man, is Lord of the Sabbath. Then Jesus healed a man's withered hand, because it is right to do good on the Sabbath.

Jesus healed many people. Matthew says He was the gentle Servant that Isaiah wrote about, who would not break a bruised reed. When Jesus freed a man from a demon, some leaders said His power came from Satan. Jesus said that was foolish. A kingdom fighting itself cannot stand. He was defeating evil by the Spirit of God.

Some asked for a sign. Jesus said the only sign would be the sign of Jonah. As Jonah was three days in the big fish, Jesus would be three days in the earth, and then rise again. Later, Jesus pointed to His disciples and said that whoever does the will of His Father is His brother, sister and mother.

Memory Verse

For whoever does the will of my Father who is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

Matthew 12 · Grade 4

The Servant Who Does Good

Name Date

Read and Think

The Sabbath was God's gift of rest, but some Pharisees had added many strict rules. When the hungry disciples picked grain, the Pharisees accused them. Jesus reminded them that David ate holy bread when he was hungry, and that God said, "I desire mercy, and not sacrifice." Then He made a bold claim: "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

In the synagogue, Jesus asked whether they would rescue a sheep that fell into a pit on the Sabbath. Of course they would! "Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep!" He healed the man's withered hand. Instead of rejoicing, the Pharisees began plotting against Jesus. Matthew quotes Isaiah: God's chosen Servant would bring justice gently, without breaking a bruised reed.

When Jesus healed a man who was blind and mute, some said He used Satan's power. Jesus answered that He was driving out evil by the Spirit of God, which showed God's Kingdom had come. He warned that our words reveal our hearts. Like Jonah, He would be three days and nights in the earth. And He welcomed everyone who does His Father's will into His family.

Matthew 12 · Grade 5

Something Greater Is Here

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 12 shows rising opposition. The Pharisees accuse Jesus' disciples of breaking the Sabbath. Jesus answers with Scripture and then three times points to Himself: "One greater than the temple is here," "someone greater than Jonah is here," and "someone greater than Solomon is here." He is Lord of the Sabbath, the true rest God promised.

After Jesus heals a withered hand, the Pharisees plot to kill Him. Jesus withdraws, and Matthew quotes Isaiah 42: the Servant will proclaim justice to the nations, yet He will not quarrel or shout; He will not break a bruised reed or quench a smoking flax. The Messiah's strength is gentle.

When Jesus casts out a demon, the Pharisees claim He does it by Beelzebul. Jesus shows that is absurd and declares that if He casts out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom has come. He is the stronger man who binds the strong man. He warns that rejecting the Spirit's clear work is very serious, and that every idle word will be judged. Finally, He redefines family: those who do the Father's will belong to Him.

Show What You Know

  1. What three things did Jesus say He is greater than?

  2. How does Isaiah 42 describe the Servant?

  3. Why is it absurd to say Jesus casts out demons by Satan?

  4. What does the picture of the stronger man binding the strong man mean?

  5. How did Jesus describe His true family?
