Matthew 12 · Grade 5
Something Greater Is Here
Read and Think
Matthew 12 shows rising opposition. The Pharisees accuse Jesus' disciples of breaking the Sabbath. Jesus answers with Scripture and then three times points to Himself: "One greater than the temple is here," "someone greater than Jonah is here," and "someone greater than Solomon is here." He is Lord of the Sabbath, the true rest God promised.
After Jesus heals a withered hand, the Pharisees plot to kill Him. Jesus withdraws, and Matthew quotes Isaiah 42: the Servant will proclaim justice to the nations, yet He will not quarrel or shout; He will not break a bruised reed or quench a smoking flax. The Messiah's strength is gentle.
When Jesus casts out a demon, the Pharisees claim He does it by Beelzebul. Jesus shows that is absurd and declares that if He casts out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom has come. He is the stronger man who binds the strong man. He warns that rejecting the Spirit's clear work is very serious, and that every idle word will be judged. Finally, He redefines family: those who do the Father's will belong to Him.
