Jesus told them to tell John what they saw. Blind people could see. People who could not walk were walking. People heard the good news. Jesus is the one!

The Gentle Savior

Name Date

Read the Story

John the Baptist was in prison. He sent his disciples to ask Jesus, "Are you he who comes, or should we look for another?" Jesus told them to report what they saw: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor hear the good news. These were signs the prophets said the Messiah would do.

Jesus praised John as more than a prophet. He was the messenger sent to prepare the way. But some towns saw Jesus' mighty works and still did not repent. Jesus warned them sadly.

Then Jesus prayed, thanking His Father for showing these things to little children. He said, "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart."

Memory Verse

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.”

Rest for the Weary

Name Date

Read and Think

John the Baptist had boldly prepared the way for Jesus, but now he sat in Herod's prison. Perhaps discouraged, he sent his disciples to ask, "Are you he who comes, or should we look for another?" Jesus did not scold him. He pointed to the signs Isaiah had promised: the blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear. And the poor hear good news.

Jesus then honored John before the crowd as the greatest of the prophets, the messenger of Malachi's prophecy. Yet many in that generation rejected both John and Jesus, like children who complain no matter what game is played. Towns like Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum saw great miracles and still did not repent.

Jesus thanked the Father for hiding these things from the proud and revealing them to little children. Then He gave one of the sweetest invitations in the Bible: "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest." A yoke joined animals for work. Jesus' yoke is easy and His burden is light, because He is gentle and humble in heart.

Matthew 11 · Grade 5

Wisdom Revealed to Little Children

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 11 opens with honest doubt. John, the fiery prophet, waits in prison and asks whether Jesus is truly the Coming One. Jesus answers with Scripture fulfilled before people's eyes, adding, "Blessed is he who finds no occasion for stumbling in me." Jesus may not be the kind of Messiah people expected, but He is the true one.

Jesus calls John the Elijah who was to come, the greatest born of women, yet says the least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater, because they will see the full work of Christ. Still, many rejected God's messengers. They said John had a demon for fasting and Jesus a glutton for eating with sinners. "Wisdom is justified by her children": time will show who is right.

In a remarkable prayer, Jesus reveals His unique relationship with the Father: no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him. Then He opens the door wide. The proud cannot earn this knowledge, but the weary can receive it. Jesus offers rest to all who come and learn from Him.
