Matthew 10 · Grade 5

The Cost and Comfort of Mission

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 10 is the second of five major teaching sections in Matthew. Jesus names the twelve apostles and sends them on a mission. Like Jesus, they are to preach the Kingdom and heal, depending on God's provision rather than packing extra. Where they are welcomed, they bring peace; where they are rejected, they move on.

Jesus is realistic about opposition. He is sending them out "as sheep among wolves," so they must be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. They may be handed over to councils, and even families may be divided over Him. A disciple is not above his teacher; if they rejected Jesus, they will reject His followers too. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

In the middle of these warnings, Jesus gives great comfort. Do not fear those who can only harm the body. Two sparrows are sold for a coin, yet none falls apart from the Father. "Therefore don't be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows." Whoever confesses Jesus before others, He will confess before His Father, and anyone who receives His messengers receives Him.
