Matthew 1 · Grade 5

Son of David, Savior of Sinners

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew writes to show that Jesus is the Messiah, the promised Christ. His first sentence calls Jesus "the son of David, the son of Abraham." The genealogy is arranged in three groups of fourteen generations: from Abraham to David, from David to the exile in Babylon, and from the exile to Christ. History was moving toward Jesus all along.

The genealogy also includes surprising people, such as Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and the wife of Uriah. Some were outsiders and some had sinful stories. God's grace reaches into messy family histories. Then Matthew tells us that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit in the virgin Mary. Joseph is described as a righteous man, and when the angel speaks, he obeys.

The angel names the child Jesus, a name that means the LORD saves, because He will save His people from their sins. Matthew quotes Isaiah: the virgin will bear a son, and they will call Him Immanuel, "God with us." Jesus is not only a great teacher. He is God come near to rescue us.
