Mark 9 · Grade 3

Servant of All

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus took Peter, James and John up a high mountain. He was changed in front of them. His clothes became very white, like snow. Elijah and Moses talked with Him. A cloud came, and a voice said, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him."

When they came down, a father asked Jesus to help his son, who was suffering. The father said, "I believe. Help my unbelief!" Jesus made the boy well.

On the road, the disciples argued about who was the greatest. Jesus said, "If any man wants to be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all." He took a little child in His arms. He said whoever welcomes a child like this in His name welcomes Him. Even giving a cup of water in His name will be rewarded.

Mark 9 · Grade 4

Faith and Greatness

Name Date

Read and Think

Six days after Peter's confession, Jesus took Peter, James and John up a high mountain. He was transfigured; His clothes became dazzling white. Elijah and Moses talked with Him. Peter, terrified, offered to make three tents. A cloud overshadowed them and the Father said, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." Suddenly they saw only Jesus.

Below, the other disciples could not help a boy who had suffered from childhood. His father said, "If you can do anything, have compassion on us." Jesus answered, "If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes." The father cried, "I believe. Help my unbelief!" Jesus healed the boy. Later He explained that this kind can come out only by prayer.

Jesus again predicted His death and resurrection, but the disciples did not understand and were afraid to ask. On the road they argued about who was greatest. Jesus said the first must be last and servant of all. He welcomed a little child and taught that anyone who gives a cup of water in His name will not lose his reward.

Mark 9 · Grade 5

Listen to Him

Name Date

Read and Think

The transfiguration confirms Peter's confession and Jesus' teaching about the cross. Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets, appear with Jesus, but the Father singles out Jesus alone: "Listen to him," especially as He speaks of suffering. Coming down, Jesus explains that Elijah has come in John the Baptist and that the Son of Man must suffer.

The healing of the boy reveals the disciples' powerlessness without prayer and dependence on God. The father's cry, "I believe. Help my unbelief!" is one of the most honest prayers in Scripture. Faith is not the absence of doubt but turning to Jesus with what faith we have.

Mark 9 also continues the pattern of chapters 8 through 10: Jesus predicts His passion, the disciples misunderstand, and Jesus teaches about discipleship. Here the misunderstanding is an argument over greatness. Jesus answers with a living illustration, a child, who had no status in that society. He warns sternly against causing little ones to stumble and urges radical seriousness about sin, using strong images, so that we would not lose eternal life.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does the Father single out Jesus from Moses and Elijah?

  2. What does Jesus say about Elijah coming first?

  3. What does the father's prayer teach about faith?

  4. What three-part pattern repeats in Mark 8 through 10?

  5. Why was a child a powerful illustration of greatness?
