Mark 9 · Grade 5

Listen to Him

Name Date

Read and Think

The transfiguration confirms Peter's confession and Jesus' teaching about the cross. Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets, appear with Jesus, but the Father singles out Jesus alone: "Listen to him," especially as He speaks of suffering. Coming down, Jesus explains that Elijah has come in John the Baptist and that the Son of Man must suffer.

The healing of the boy reveals the disciples' powerlessness without prayer and dependence on God. The father's cry, "I believe. Help my unbelief!" is one of the most honest prayers in Scripture. Faith is not the absence of doubt but turning to Jesus with what faith we have.

Mark 9 also continues the pattern of chapters 8 through 10: Jesus predicts His passion, the disciples misunderstand, and Jesus teaches about discipleship. Here the misunderstanding is an argument over greatness. Jesus answers with a living illustration, a child, who had no status in that society. He warns sternly against causing little ones to stumble and urges radical seriousness about sin, using strong images, so that we would not lose eternal life.
