Another big crowd was with Jesus for three days with nothing to eat. Jesus had compassion on them. With seven loaves and a few small fish, He fed about four thousand people. Seven baskets were left over.

Jesus healed a blind man at Bethsaida. First the man saw people like trees walking. Jesus touched his eyes again, and he saw everyone clearly.

Jesus asked His disciples, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ." Jesus told them He would suffer, be killed, and rise again after three days. He said, "Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."

Seeing Clearly

Name Date

Read and Think

Again a great crowd had been with Jesus three days with nothing to eat. Jesus had compassion on them and fed four thousand with seven loaves and a few small fish. Then the Pharisees demanded a sign from heaven. Jesus sighed deeply and refused. In the boat, He warned the disciples about the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod. They thought He meant bread. Jesus asked, "Don't you understand yet?"

At Bethsaida Jesus healed a blind man in two stages. At first the man saw people like walking trees. After Jesus touched him again, he saw everything clearly.

At Caesarea Philippi Jesus asked, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ." Jesus began to teach that the Son of Man must suffer, be rejected, be killed and after three days rise again. Peter rebuked Him, but Jesus rebuked Peter. He called the crowd to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him. "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?"

Mark 8 · Grade 5

The Turning Point

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 8 is the hinge of the Gospel. The first half asks who Jesus is, and Peter's confession answers: "You are the Christ." The second half asks what kind of Christ He is, and Jesus answers: a suffering Son of Man who will be rejected, killed and raised. From here on the journey leads to Jerusalem and the cross.

The healing of the blind man in two stages is unique to Mark and acts as a parable of the disciples. Like the man, they see partially. They recognize Jesus as the Christ, but they cannot see clearly why He must suffer. Earlier, Jesus had rebuked their dullness after the second feeding: "Having eyes, don't you see?" Their full sight will come only after the cross and resurrection.

Peter's rebuke shows his partial sight. He wanted a Messiah without suffering. Jesus' sharp response, "Get behind me, Satan," reveals that avoiding the cross is the devil's temptation. Then Jesus defines discipleship: denying self, taking up the cross, and following Him. Paradoxically, whoever loses his life for Jesus and the gospel will save it. Shame about Jesus now leads to shame when He comes in glory.

Show What You Know

  1. How does Mark 8 serve as the hinge of the Gospel?

  2. How is the two-stage healing a picture of the disciples?

  3. What kind of Messiah did Peter want?

  4. Why did Jesus call Peter Satan?

  5. What is the paradox of losing and saving one's life?
