Mark 7 · Grade 3

A Clean Heart

Name Date

Read the Story

Some leaders saw Jesus' disciples eat without washing their hands the special way. Their tradition said to wash a certain way. They asked Jesus why His disciples did not follow it. Jesus said they cared more about their own rules than God's commands.

Jesus taught that what goes into a person from outside does not make him unclean. Bad thoughts and actions come from inside, from the heart. That is what makes a person unclean. God wants clean hearts.

A Greek woman begged Jesus to help her daughter. She said, "Yes, Lord. Yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." Jesus was pleased with her answer, and her daughter was healed. Then Jesus healed a deaf man by saying, "Ephphatha!" The people said, "He has done all things well."

Memory Verse

“There is nothing from outside of the man that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man.”

Mark 7 · Grade 4

From the Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem noticed that some disciples ate with unwashed hands. Mark explains that the Pharisees had many rules about washing hands, cups and pots. Jesus called them hypocrites, quoting Isaiah: "This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me." He showed how they used a rule called Corban to avoid helping their parents. This cancelled God's command.

Jesus told the crowd that nothing outside a person can defile him by going in. Later He explained to His disciples that food goes into the stomach, not the heart. Mark adds that Jesus declared all foods clean. Evil thoughts and actions, such as theft, greed, envy and pride, come from within. They defile a person.

In the region of Tyre, a Greek woman begged Jesus to help her daughter. Jesus tested her faith, and she humbly replied that even the dogs eat the children's crumbs. Jesus healed her daughter. In the Decapolis, He healed a deaf man, saying, "Ephphatha!" The crowds were astonished: "He has done all things well."

Mark 7 · Grade 5

He Has Done All Things Well

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 7 is about purity, an issue that divided Jews from Gentiles. The Pharisees' traditions were meant to protect holiness. But they had become a burden that sometimes overruled God's real commands. Jesus exposes this by citing Isaiah and the example of Corban: people could dedicate money to God to avoid supporting aging parents. Human tradition had nullified the fifth commandment.

Jesus' teaching that defilement comes from within reveals the real human problem: a corrupt heart. Mark notes that Jesus declared all foods clean. The Kingdom was breaking down the old food barriers between Jews and Gentiles. The early church later understood this (Acts 10).

Fittingly, Jesus next goes into Gentile territory. The Syrophoenician woman's clever, humble answer shows faith that understands grace: she claims no right, only the overflow of mercy. Then in the Decapolis, Jesus heals a deaf man with gestures he could understand and a sigh toward heaven. The crowd's words, "He has done all things well," echo Genesis 1, where God saw that all He made was very good. They also echo Isaiah 35, which promised the deaf would hear when God came to save.

Show What You Know

  1. How had the Pharisees' traditions sometimes worked against God's commands?

  2. What does Jesus' teaching about defilement reveal about the human problem?

  3. How does declaring all foods clean connect to Jews and Gentiles?

  4. What kind of faith did the Syrophoenician woman show?

  5. What two Old Testament passages does He has done all things well echo?
