Mark 7 · Grade 5

He Has Done All Things Well

Read and Think

Mark 7 is about purity, an issue that divided Jews from Gentiles. The Pharisees' traditions were meant to protect holiness. But they had become a burden that sometimes overruled God's real commands. Jesus exposes this by citing Isaiah and the example of Corban: people could dedicate money to God to avoid supporting aging parents. Human tradition had nullified the fifth commandment.

Jesus' teaching that defilement comes from within reveals the real human problem: a corrupt heart. Mark notes that Jesus declared all foods clean. The Kingdom was breaking down the old food barriers between Jews and Gentiles. The early church later understood this (Acts 10).

Fittingly, Jesus next goes into Gentile territory. The Syrophoenician woman's clever, humble answer shows faith that understands grace: she claims no right, only the overflow of mercy. Then in the Decapolis, Jesus heals a deaf man with gestures he could understand and a sigh toward heaven. The crowd's words, "He has done all things well," echo Genesis 1, where God saw that all He made was very good. They also echo Isaiah 35, which promised the deaf would hear when God came to save.
