Mark 6 · Grade 3

Like Sheep With a Shepherd

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus went to His hometown, but the people there did not believe in Him. He was amazed at their unbelief. Then Jesus sent out the twelve apostles two by two. They preached that people should repent, and they healed many who were sick.

The apostles came back and told Jesus everything. Jesus said, "Come away into a deserted place, and rest awhile." But a great crowd followed. Jesus had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. He taught them.

It grew late. There were only five loaves and two fish. Jesus had the people sit in groups on the green grass. He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to hand out. Everyone ate and was filled. That night Jesus walked on the sea to the disciples' boat and said, "Cheer up! It is I! Don't be afraid."

Memory Verse

“He took the five loaves and the two fish; and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves, and he gave to his disciples to set before them, and he divided the two fish among them all.”

Mark 6 · Grade 4

The Compassionate Shepherd

Name Date

Read and Think

Jesus returned to Nazareth and taught in the synagogue. The people were astonished but offended, asking, "Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary?" Jesus said a prophet is not without honor except in his own hometown. He could do few mighty works there and marveled at their unbelief. Then He sent the twelve out two by two with authority, telling them to take nothing but a staff. They preached repentance and healed many.

King Herod heard about Jesus and feared He was John the Baptist raised from the dead. Mark explains that Herod had imprisoned John for speaking the truth about Herod's marriage, and later, because of a foolish promise at a feast, had John killed. John's disciples buried him.

When the apostles returned, Jesus invited them to rest, but the crowds came. Jesus saw them as sheep without a shepherd and taught them. He fed five thousand men with five loaves and two fish, and twelve baskets were left over. That night He walked on the sea, and when He got into the boat, the wind ceased.

Mark 6 · Grade 5

Two Kings, Two Banquets

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 6 shows contrasting responses to Jesus. In Nazareth, familiarity bred unbelief; the townspeople could not see past the carpenter they knew. Jesus' power was not lessened, but He would not force His works on those who refused Him. In contrast, the twelve go out in dependence on God, and their mission succeeds.

Mark sandwiches the story of John's death between the apostles' sending and return. Herod, a weak ruler controlled by pride and fear, hosted a lavish birthday feast that ended in the death of God's prophet. John's fate foreshadows Jesus' own and warns the disciples of the cost of faithfulness.

Jesus then hosted a very different banquet in the wilderness. As the true Shepherd-King of Psalm 23, He made the people lie down on green grass and fed them. The groups of hundreds and fifties recall Israel's camp in the wilderness. Walking on the sea, Jesus meant to pass by them, like God passing by Moses, revealing His glory. Yet Mark notes that the disciples' hearts were hardened; they had not understood about the loaves.

  2. How does John's death foreshadow Jesus' ministry?

  3. How do Herod's feast and Jesus' meal contrast?

  4. What Old Testament passage does the green grass and shepherd image recall?

  5. What did Mark say about the disciples' hearts after the miracles?
