Mark 6 · Grade 5

Two Kings, Two Banquets

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 6 shows contrasting responses to Jesus. In Nazareth, familiarity bred unbelief; the townspeople could not see past the carpenter they knew. Jesus' power was not lessened, but He would not force His works on those who refused Him. In contrast, the twelve go out in dependence on God, and their mission succeeds.

Mark sandwiches the story of John's death between the apostles' sending and return. Herod, a weak ruler controlled by pride and fear, hosted a lavish birthday feast that ended in the death of God's prophet. John's fate foreshadows Jesus' own and warns the disciples of the cost of faithfulness.

Jesus then hosted a very different banquet in the wilderness. As the true Shepherd-King of Psalm 23, He made the people lie down on green grass and fed them. The groups of hundreds and fifties recall Israel's camp in the wilderness. Walking on the sea, Jesus meant to pass by them, like God passing by Moses, revealing His glory. Yet Mark notes that the disciples' hearts were hardened; they had not understood about the loaves.
