Don't Be Afraid, Only Believe

Name Date

Read the Story

Across the lake, Jesus met a man who was very troubled and lived alone among the tombs. Jesus set him free from evil spirits. The man was calm and in his right mind. Jesus told him, "Go to your house, to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you."

Back across the lake, a woman who had been sick for twelve years came behind Jesus. She thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be made well." She touched them and was healed right away. Jesus said, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace."

A synagogue leader named Jairus begged Jesus to help his dying daughter. Then news came that she had died. Jesus said, "Don't be afraid, only believe." He took the girl's hand and said, "Talitha cumi!" which means, "Girl, I tell you, get up!" She got up and walked. She was twelve years old.

Three Who Were Helpless

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 5 shows Jesus' power in three desperate situations. In the country of the Gadarenes, a man with an unclean spirit lived among the tombs. No one could control him. When Jesus asked his name, the spirit answered, "Legion," for there were many. Jesus cast them out, and they entered a herd of pigs that rushed into the sea. The townspeople found the man clothed and in his right mind, but they were afraid and asked Jesus to leave. Jesus sent the man home to tell what the Lord had done.

A woman had suffered bleeding for twelve years and spent all she had on doctors. Believing that touching Jesus' clothes would heal her, she touched Him in the crowd and was healed immediately. Jesus called her "Daughter" and said her faith had made her well.

Meanwhile, Jairus's little daughter died. Jesus told him, "Don't be afraid, only believe." Taking Peter, James and John, He entered the house, took the child by the hand, and said, "Talitha cumi!" She rose and walked, and Jesus told them to give her something to eat.

Mark 5 · Grade 5

Power Over Death and Darkness

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 5 presents three escalating demonstrations of Jesus' authority: over a host of demons, over an incurable disease, and over death itself. Each person was unclean or cut off by the standards of the day: a man possessed and living among tombs in Gentile land, a woman whose condition made her ceremonially unclean, and a dead girl. Jesus does not become unclean by touching them. Instead, His holiness makes them clean and whole.

The demoniac's story shows the destructive power of evil and Jesus' greater power. The demons, many as a Roman legion, recognized Him as "Son of the Most High God" and begged Him. Freed, the man became the first missionary to the Decapolis, a Gentile region.

The account of Jairus's daughter is wrapped around the healed woman, a technique Mark often uses. The delay caused by the woman seemed fatal. But it became a lesson in faith. Jesus says the girl "is asleep" because death is not final in His presence. Mark preserves Jesus' Aramaic words, "Talitha cumi," an eyewitness detail likely from Peter, who was there.

Show What You Know

  1. What three areas of Jesus' authority does Mark 5 show?

  2. How do the three people share a common situation?

  3. What happens when Jesus touches the unclean?

  4. What literary technique does Mark use with Jairus and the woman?

  5. Why did Jesus say the girl was sleeping?
