Even the Wind Obeys

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus sat in a boat and taught a big crowd on the shore. He told a story about a farmer whose seed fell on the path, on rocky ground, among thorns, and on good soil. Only the good soil made a big crop. Jesus explained that the seed is God's word. People who hear it and accept it bear fruit.

Jesus said a lamp is not put under a basket, but on a stand. He said God's Kingdom is like a mustard seed. It is tiny, but it grows into a large plant where birds can rest in its shade.

That evening a great storm came while they crossed the lake. Jesus was asleep. The disciples cried, "Teacher, don't you care that we are dying?" Jesus said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" There was a great calm. Jesus asked why they were afraid and had no faith. They said, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"

They were greatly afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Seeds and Storms

Name Date

Read and Think

Jesus taught a great crowd from a boat. In the parable of the sower, seed fell on four kinds of ground. Seed on the path was eaten by birds; on rocky ground it sprang up but withered; among thorns it was choked; but on good ground it produced thirty, sixty, and a hundred times as much. Jesus explained that some hear the word but Satan takes it away, some fall away in trouble, and some let worries and riches choke it. But others hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit.

Jesus told more parables. A lamp is put on a stand, not hidden. Seed grows night and day, though the farmer does not know how. The Kingdom of God is like a tiny mustard seed that becomes the greatest of garden plants.

That evening a great windstorm struck the boat while Jesus slept on a cushion. The terrified disciples woke Him. He rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" and there was a great calm. He asked, "Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?" They were filled with awe, asking who He could be.

Mark 4 · Grade 5

Who Then Is This?

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 4 collects Jesus' parables of the Kingdom. The sower explains the mixed response to Jesus' preaching. The soil is the hearer's heart, and only those who receive the word with understanding and perseverance bear fruit. Jesus explained that to outsiders everything comes in parables, so that, as Isaiah said, seeing they may not perceive. Parables reveal to the humble and conceal from the hard-hearted.

The lamp shows that what is hidden is meant to be revealed. "Take heed what you hear": the measure you give is the measure you receive. The seed growing secretly, unique to Mark, shows that God brings the harvest, not human effort. The mustard seed shows the Kingdom's unlikely beginning and great end.

The storm narrative answers the question the parables raise: who is this teacher? In the Old Testament, only God rules the raging sea and stills its waves. Jesus sleeps peacefully, showing His trust in the Father, and with a word commands creation. The disciples move from fear of the storm to a greater, holy fear of Jesus Himself. Their question, "Who then is this?" is the question Mark wants every reader to answer.

  2. What does the parable of the seed growing secretly teach?

  3. Why is calming the sea a sign of Jesus' divinity?

  5. What question does Mark want every reader to answer?
