Mark 2 · Grade 3

Jesus Came for Sinners

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus was teaching in a crowded house in Capernaum. Four men carried a friend who could not walk. They dug through the roof and let him down. Jesus saw their faith and forgave the man's sins. Some teachers thought only God can forgive sins. To show He had that power, Jesus said, "I tell you, arise, take up your mat, and go to your house." The man did! Everyone praised God.

Jesus saw Levi sitting at the tax office. Jesus said, "Follow me." Levi got up and followed Him. Later Jesus ate at Levi's house with many tax collectors and sinners.

Some leaders complained. Jesus said, "Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." Jesus also said, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."

Memory Verse

When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Mark 2 · Grade 4

Who Can Forgive Sins?

Name Date

Read and Think

When Jesus returned to Capernaum, so many people gathered that there was no room, even at the door. Four men carrying a paralyzed friend could not get near, so they removed part of the roof and let him down on his mat. Seeing their faith, Jesus said, "Son, your sins are forgiven you."

Some scribes reasoned in their hearts that this was blasphemy, because only God can forgive sins. Jesus knew their thoughts. To show that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, He told the man to arise, take his mat, and go home. The man did so in front of everyone, and they glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"

Jesus called Levi, a tax collector, and ate with tax collectors and sinners. When the Pharisees complained, Jesus said He came to call sinners. He explained that His disciples did not fast while He, the bridegroom, was with them, and that new wine needs new wineskins. When accused of breaking the Sabbath, He said the Sabbath was made for people, and that the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.

  2. Why did the scribes think Jesus was blaspheming?

Mark 2 · Grade 5

New Wine, New Wineskins

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 2 begins a series of controversies between Jesus and the religious leaders. The first concerns forgiveness. The scribes were right that only God can forgive sins; their mistake was not recognizing who Jesus is. By healing the visible paralysis, Jesus proved His authority over the invisible problem of sin. The title Son of Man, from Daniel 7, points to a heavenly figure given everlasting dominion.

The second controversy concerns table fellowship. Eating with someone signaled acceptance. Jesus' meal with tax collectors, seen as traitors, and sinners scandalized the Pharisees. Jesus answered with the image of a physician: He came for those who know they are sick.

The third and fourth concern fasting and the Sabbath. Jesus is the bridegroom; His presence is a time of joy. His Kingdom is new wine that cannot be contained in the old wineskins of human tradition. When His disciples picked grain on the Sabbath, Jesus pointed to David eating the holy bread and declared Himself Lord of the Sabbath. God's law was meant to serve human good, and Jesus has authority to interpret it.

Show What You Know

  1. What were the scribes right about, and what did they miss?

  2. Where does the title Son of Man come from, and what does it suggest?

  3. Why was eating with tax collectors and sinners so controversial?

  4. What does the image of new wine and old wineskins mean?

  5. What example did Jesus use to defend His disciples on the Sabbath?

No one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine pours out, and the skins will be destroyed; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins.”
