Read the Story

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices. Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb. They asked each other, "Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?" But the very large stone was already rolled back.

Inside they saw a young man in a white robe. He said, "Don't be amazed. You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen! He is not here." He told them to tell His disciples and Peter that Jesus would meet them in Galilee.

Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene. Later He appeared to the eleven. He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to the whole creation." Then He was taken up into heaven, and the disciples went out and preached everywhere.

He Has Risen

Name Date

Read and Think

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices to anoint Jesus' body. Very early on the first day of the week, at sunrise, they came to the tomb, wondering who would roll away the very large stone. Looking up, they saw it was already rolled back.

Entering the tomb, they saw a young man in a white robe and were amazed. He said, "Don't be amazed. You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him!" He told them to go and tell His disciples, and Peter, that Jesus was going before them into Galilee. The women fled, trembling and astonished.

Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene, then to two disciples walking in the country, and then to the eleven. He rebuked their unbelief and said, "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to the whole creation." After speaking with them, the Lord Jesus was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. They went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them.

Mark 16 · Grade 5

The Beginning Continues

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark's account of the resurrection is brief and powerful. The women came expecting to anoint a corpse; instead they found an empty tomb and a messenger announcing that the crucified Jesus has risen, just as He said in His three predictions. The specific mention of Peter shows the risen Lord's grace toward the disciple who denied Him.

The two oldest complete manuscripts of Mark end at 16:8, with the women fleeing in fear and silence, a startling ending that leaves readers to respond themselves. Most later manuscripts include verses 9-20, which many Bibles, including the WEB, print. These verses summarize resurrection appearances found in the other Gospels and Acts. Faithful Christians differ on whether Mark wrote them, but their message agrees with the rest of Scripture.

Either way, Mark's Gospel began by calling itself the beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Son of God (Mark 1:1), and it ends with the Good News going out. The story Mark tells is only the beginning; it continues as disciples go into all the world. The risen and ascended Lord, seated at God's right hand, works with His people, confirming the word. The question Mark raised in 4:41, who then is this, now demands every reader's answer and witness.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does the specific mention of Peter matter?

  2. Where do the earliest manuscripts of Mark end?

  3. How should we think about verses 9-20?

  4. How does the end of Mark connect to its first verse?

  5. What does it mean that the Lord was working with them?
