Mark 16 · Grade 5
The Beginning Continues
Read and Think
Mark's account of the resurrection is brief and powerful. The women came expecting to anoint a corpse; instead they found an empty tomb and a messenger announcing that the crucified Jesus has risen, just as He said in His three predictions. The specific mention of Peter shows the risen Lord's grace toward the disciple who denied Him.
The two oldest complete manuscripts of Mark end at 16:8, with the women fleeing in fear and silence, a startling ending that leaves readers to respond themselves. Most later manuscripts include verses 9-20, which many Bibles, including the WEB, print. These verses summarize resurrection appearances found in the other Gospels and Acts. Faithful Christians differ on whether Mark wrote them, but their message agrees with the rest of Scripture.
Either way, Mark's Gospel began by calling itself the beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Son of God (Mark 1:1), and it ends with the Good News going out. The story Mark tells is only the beginning; it continues as disciples go into all the world. The risen and ascended Lord, seated at God's right hand, works with His people, confirming the word. The question Mark raised in 4:41, who then is this, now demands every reader's answer and witness.
