Truly the Son of God

Name Date

Read the Story

Early in the morning, the leaders took Jesus to Pilate. Pilate asked, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Pilate knew the leaders were jealous of Jesus. He offered to free Jesus, but the crowd asked for a prisoner named Barabbas instead. They shouted for Jesus to be crucified.

Soldiers dressed Jesus in purple and put a crown of thorns on His head. They made fun of Him. A man named Simon was made to carry Jesus' cross. They crucified Jesus. A sign said, "THE KING OF THE JEWS."

At noon, darkness came over the land until three o'clock. Jesus cried out with a loud voice and died. The veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. A soldier said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" Joseph of Arimathea laid Jesus' body in a tomb cut out of rock. But this was not the end. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead!

Mark 15 · Grade 4

The King of the Jews

Name Date

Read and Think

At dawn the chief priests bound Jesus and handed Him to Pilate. Pilate asked, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "So you say." To the many accusations He gave no answer, and Pilate marveled. Pilate knew the priests had handed Him over because of envy. He offered to release Jesus, but the crowd, stirred up by the priests, chose Barabbas and shouted, "Crucify him!"

Wishing to please the crowd, Pilate had Jesus flogged and handed Him over. Soldiers clothed Him in purple, pressed a crown of thorns on His head, and mocked Him. Simon of Cyrene was compelled to carry His cross to Golgotha. They crucified Him at the third hour; the sign read "THE KING OF THE JEWS." Passersby and leaders mocked, saying He saved others but could not save Himself.

From noon to three o'clock darkness covered the land. Jesus cried out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Then He cried with a loud voice and gave up His spirit. The temple veil tore from top to bottom. The centurion said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" Women who followed Him watched. Joseph of Arimathea boldly asked for the body and laid it in a rock tomb. But this was not the end. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead! (Mark 16)

Mark 15 · Grade 5

The Torn Veil

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 15 tells of Jesus' trial before Pilate, crucifixion, death and burial. Mark emphasizes the title "King of the Jews," used by Pilate, the soldiers, the sign and the mockers. Each uses it in unbelief or scorn. Yet each unknowingly speaks the truth. The soldiers' mock coronation with a purple cloak and thorny crown displays the true King enthroned on a cross.

Barabbas, a rebel guilty of murder, goes free while the innocent Jesus dies, a picture of substitution. The mockery that He saved others but cannot save Himself is profoundly true: by refusing to save Himself, Jesus saves others. Jesus' cry from Psalm 22 expresses real abandonment as He bears sin's judgment. Yet the psalm ends in victory and praise.

Two signs follow His death. The temple veil, which separated the Most Holy Place, is torn from top to bottom, showing that God opened access to His presence. And a Gentile centurion confesses Jesus as the Son of God, completing Mark's opening line. Mark carefully names the women who watched and notes Pilate's confirmation that Jesus was truly dead, preparing for the resurrection.

Show What You Know

  1. How does Mark use the title King of the Jews with irony?

  2. How is Barabbas's release a picture of substitution?

  3. Why is it meaningful that Jesus quoted Psalm 22?

  4. What did the tearing of the temple veil signify?

  5. How does the centurion's confession connect to Mark 1:1?
