Mark 15 · Grade 5
The Torn Veil
Read and Think
Mark 15 tells of Jesus' trial before Pilate, crucifixion, death and burial. Mark emphasizes the title "King of the Jews," used by Pilate, the soldiers, the sign and the mockers. Each uses it in unbelief or scorn. Yet each unknowingly speaks the truth. The soldiers' mock coronation with a purple cloak and thorny crown displays the true King enthroned on a cross.
Barabbas, a rebel guilty of murder, goes free while the innocent Jesus dies, a picture of substitution. The mockery that He saved others but cannot save Himself is profoundly true: by refusing to save Himself, Jesus saves others. Jesus' cry from Psalm 22 expresses real abandonment as He bears sin's judgment. Yet the psalm ends in victory and praise.
Two signs follow His death. The temple veil, which separated the Most Holy Place, is torn from top to bottom, showing that God opened access to His presence. And a Gentile centurion confesses Jesus as the Son of God, completing Mark's opening line. Mark carefully names the women who watched and notes Pilate's confirmation that Jesus was truly dead, preparing for the resurrection.
