Not What I Want

Name Date

Read the Story

At Bethany, a woman poured very costly perfume on Jesus' head. Jesus said she had done a good work. Then Judas, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them.

At the Passover meal, Jesus took bread, blessed it and broke it. He said, "Take, eat. This is my body." He took the cup and said, "This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many."

In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was very sad. He prayed, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire, but what you desire." Then Judas came with a crowd, and Jesus was arrested. Later Peter said three times that he did not know Jesus. When the rooster crowed, he remembered and cried.

The Cup

Name Date

Read and Think

Two days before the Passover, the chief priests sought to arrest Jesus secretly. At Bethany, a woman broke an alabaster jar of costly ointment and poured it on His head. Some said it was wasted, but Jesus said she had anointed His body for burial, and her deed would be told wherever the gospel is preached. Judas then went to the chief priests to betray Him for money.

At the Passover meal, Jesus said one of the twelve would betray Him. He took bread, blessed and broke it: "Take, eat. This is my body." He took the cup: "This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many." On the way to the Mount of Olives, Jesus said all would fall away. Peter insisted he would not, but Jesus said he would deny Him three times before the rooster crowed twice.

In Gethsemane Jesus, deeply distressed, prayed, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire, but what you desire." His disciples slept. Judas came with a crowd, and Jesus was arrested; the disciples fled. At His trial, the high priest asked if He was the Christ. Jesus answered, "I am." Outside, Peter denied Him three times and wept.

Mark 14 · Grade 5

I Am

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 14 opens the passion narrative with a contrast: the leaders' plot and Judas's betrayal surround a woman's costly devotion. Her anointing, worth about a year's wages, is the only anointing Jesus receives before His burial. The women who come later with spices will find Him risen.

The Last Supper transforms the Passover. As Israel remembered deliverance from Egypt through the lamb's blood, Jesus now identifies the bread with His body and the cup with His blood of the new covenant, poured out for many, echoing Isaiah 53. He looks forward to drinking it new in the Kingdom of God.

In Gethsemane, the Son's anguish shows the true horror of the cup He must drink, the judgment of sin. Yet His intimate "Abba" and His submission show perfect obedience where Adam failed in a garden. Jesus is arrested and the disciples scatter, fulfilling Zechariah. Before the Sanhedrin, false witnesses disagree. But Jesus breaks His silence: "I am," and He will be seen at the right hand of Power, coming with the clouds. Meanwhile Peter, warming himself by the fire, denies Him.

  1. Why is the woman's anointing significant in light of Jesus' burial?

  2. How does the Last Supper transform the Passover?

  3. How does Gethsemane contrast with Adam?

  4. What did Jesus declare before the Sanhedrin?

  5. What prophecy did the scattering of the disciples fulfill?
