Stay Awake!

Read the Story

One of Jesus' disciples said, "Teacher, see what kind of stones and what kind of buildings!" Jesus said not one stone would be left on another. Later, on the Mount of Olives, four disciples asked when this would happen.

Jesus told them not to be fooled by people who say they are Christ. Wars and hard times would come. His followers would be treated badly. But Jesus said, "The Good News must first be preached to all the nations." He promised the Holy Spirit would help them know what to say.

Jesus said the Son of Man will come in clouds with great power and glory. No one knows the day or hour. He told a story of a man who left home and told the doorkeeper to keep watch. "Watch, keep alert, and pray; for you don't know when the time is."

Keep Watch

Name Date

Read and Think

As Jesus left the temple, a disciple admired its massive stones and buildings. Jesus said every stone would be thrown down. On the Mount of Olives, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked privately when this would happen and what the sign would be.

Jesus warned them not to be led astray by those claiming to be the Christ. Wars, earthquakes and famines are the beginning of birth pains. His followers would be handed over and hated for His name, but the Good News must first be preached to all nations. When they are brought to trial, the Holy Spirit will give them words. "He who endures to the end will be saved."

After a time of great trouble, the Son of Man will come in clouds with great power and glory and gather His chosen ones from the ends of the earth. As a fig tree's tender branches signal summer, the signs show He is near. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." No one knows that day or hour. Like servants whose master has gone on a journey, we must watch.

Mark 13 · Grade 5

The Olivet Discourse

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 13 is Jesus' longest speech in Mark, often called the Olivet Discourse. It answers the disciples' question about the temple's destruction, which happened in AD 70, while also looking ahead to the end of the age. Jesus' main concern is not satisfying curiosity but preparing disciples to stay faithful.

The repeated commands, "Watch," "Be careful," "Don't be troubled," shape the whole chapter. Disasters are birth pains, painful but signs of new life coming. Persecution will be an opportunity to testify, and the Spirit will speak through believers. The gospel's spread to all nations is God's priority before the end. Even the terrible trouble in Judea is limited by God for the sake of His chosen ones.

The climax is the coming of the Son of Man in clouds, quoting Daniel 7. Cosmic imagery from the prophets signals God's decisive action. Jesus' words are more permanent than creation. Remarkably, Jesus says that not even the Son knows the day or hour, only the Father, reflecting His humble role in His earthly ministry. The parable of the doorkeeper ends with a command to everyone: "Watch."

Show What You Know

  1. What historical event did Jesus' prediction about the temple point to?

  2. What does the image of birth pains suggest about disasters?

  3. What is God's priority before the end, according to Jesus?

  4. What Old Testament passage does the coming of the Son of Man in clouds quote?

  5. What is surprising about Jesus' statement concerning the day or hour?
