Mark 13 · Grade 5
The Olivet Discourse
Read and Think
Mark 13 is Jesus' longest speech in Mark, often called the Olivet Discourse. It answers the disciples' question about the temple's destruction, which happened in AD 70, while also looking ahead to the end of the age. Jesus' main concern is not satisfying curiosity but preparing disciples to stay faithful.
The repeated commands, "Watch," "Be careful," "Don't be troubled," shape the whole chapter. Disasters are birth pains, painful but signs of new life coming. Persecution will be an opportunity to testify, and the Spirit will speak through believers. The gospel's spread to all nations is God's priority before the end. Even the terrible trouble in Judea is limited by God for the sake of His chosen ones.
The climax is the coming of the Son of Man in clouds, quoting Daniel 7. Cosmic imagery from the prophets signals God's decisive action. Jesus' words are more permanent than creation. Remarkably, Jesus says that not even the Son knows the day or hour, only the Father, reflecting His humble role in His earthly ministry. The parable of the doorkeeper ends with a command to everyone: "Watch."
