The Greatest Commandment

Name Date

Read the Story

Some leaders tried to trap Jesus. They asked if they should pay taxes to Caesar. Jesus looked at a coin. He said, "Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." They were amazed.

A scribe asked which command was the greatest. Jesus said to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. He said the second is, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Jesus watched people giving money at the temple. Rich people gave a lot. A poor widow put in two small coins. Jesus said she gave more than all of them, because she gave all she had to live on.

Memory Verse

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.”

All Your Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Jesus told a parable about a man who planted a vineyard and rented it to farmers. When he sent servants to collect fruit, the farmers beat them. Finally he sent his beloved son, but they killed him. Jesus quoted Psalm 118: "The stone which the builders rejected was made the head of the corner." The leaders knew He spoke about them.

Pharisees and Herodians asked about paying taxes. Jesus answered, "Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." Sadducees, who denied the resurrection, asked a trick question. Jesus said they did not know the Scriptures or God's power, for God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

A scribe asked which commandment is first. Jesus answered with Israel's great confession, "Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one," and the command to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and second, to love your neighbor as yourself. The scribe agreed, and Jesus said he was not far from God's Kingdom. Later, Jesus praised a poor widow who gave two small coins, all she had.

Show What You Know

  1. Whom does the beloved son in the parable represent?

  2. What did Jesus tell the Sadducees they did not know?

  3. What confession did Jesus quote before the greatest commandment?

  4. Why did the widow's gift matter more to Jesus than the rich people's gifts?

Think About It

  1. What does it look like to love God with all your strength, not just your heart and mind?

  2. The widow's gift was small but total. What could you give to God wholeheartedly?

Memory Verse

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.”

Not Far From the Kingdom

Name Date

Read and Think

In Mark 12 Jesus faces a series of challenges in the temple. The parable of the tenants retells Israel's history: God sent prophet after prophet, who were rejected, and finally His beloved Son. The leaders, as tenants of God's vineyard, Israel, would kill the Son. But God would make the rejected stone the cornerstone.

The questions that follow are traps. The tax question tried to force Jesus to choose between the people and Rome. His answer affirms legitimate government while declaring God's greater claim: Caesar's image is on the coin. But God's image is on us. To the Sadducees, Jesus shows that the resurrection is rooted in God's covenant faithfulness: He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of the living.

The scribe's sincere question draws out Jesus' summary of the law: the Shema and love for neighbor. Jesus then asks how the Christ can be David's son when David calls Him Lord, pointing to His divine identity. He warns against scribes who love honor yet devour widows' houses. And then He highlights a widow whose gift shows true devotion, a quiet picture of the total self-giving He would soon display.

Show What You Know

  1. How does the parable of the tenants retell Israel's history?

  2. How did Jesus' tax answer go deeper than politics?

  3. How did Jesus root the resurrection in God's covenant?

  4. What is the Shema?

  5. How does the widow's gift foreshadow Jesus?
