Mark 11 · Grade 3

Pray and Forgive

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a young donkey. People spread their coats and branches on the road. They shouted, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"

The next day Jesus went into the temple. People were buying and selling there. Jesus turned over their tables. He taught them that the Scriptures say God's house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations, but they had made it a den of robbers.

Jesus taught His disciples, "Have faith in God." He said that when we pray, we should believe. He also said, "Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions."

Memory Verse

“Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.”

Mark 11 · Grade 4

A House of Prayer for All

Name Date

Read and Think

Near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples to bring a colt that had never been ridden. They spread cloaks on it, and Jesus rode into Jerusalem. Many spread cloaks and leafy branches on the road and shouted, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David!"

The next morning Jesus saw a leafy fig tree with no fruit and said no one would eat fruit from it again. In the temple He drove out those who bought and sold and overturned the money changers' tables. He taught that it is written that God's house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations, but they had made it a den of robbers. The chief priests and scribes sought to destroy Him because the crowd was amazed at His teaching.

The next day the disciples saw the fig tree withered from the roots. Jesus said, "Have faith in God." He taught them to pray believing and to forgive others when they pray. When the leaders asked by what authority He acted, Jesus asked them whether John's baptism was from heaven or from men. They refused to answer, so He did not tell them.

Mark 11 · Grade 5

The Fig Tree and the Temple

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 11 begins Passion Week. Jesus' entry fulfills Zechariah 9:9; He comes as Israel's humble King on a colt never ridden, an animal set apart for sacred use. The crowd's cry from Psalm 118 hails the coming kingdom of David. Yet Jesus enters the temple, looks around at everything, and leaves; the inspection comes before the judgment.

Mark sandwiches the temple clearing between the cursing and the withering of the fig tree. The leafy tree promised fruit but had none, just as the temple bustled with activity but failed in its purpose. Quoting Isaiah 56, Jesus shows that the temple was meant to be a house of prayer for all nations; the Court of the Gentiles had become a marketplace. Quoting Jeremiah 7, He calls it a den of robbers.

The withered fig tree becomes a lesson on faith. Faith in God can move mountains. Some scholars suggest that "this mountain" points to the temple mount, since Jesus Himself would become the meeting place between God and people. Prayer must be joined to forgiveness. When the leaders challenge His authority, Jesus' counter-question about John exposes that they care more about public opinion than truth.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did Jesus ride a colt that had never been ridden?

  2. How does the fig tree relate to the temple?

  3. What two prophets does Jesus quote about the temple?

  4. What did Jesus' question about John reveal about the leaders?

  5. What must be joined to prayer, according to the passage?
