Let the Children Come

Name Date

Read the Story

People brought little children to Jesus so He would touch them. The disciples told them to stop. Jesus was not pleased. He said, "Allow the little children to come to me! Don't forbid them, for God's Kingdom belongs to such as these." He took them in His arms and blessed them.

A rich man ran to Jesus and asked how to have eternal life. Jesus looked at him and loved him. He told him to sell what he had, give to the poor, and follow Him. The man went away sad, because he had many things. Jesus said, "all things are possible with God."

James and John asked for the best places. Jesus said, "the Son of Man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Then blind Bartimaeus called to Jesus. Jesus said, "Go your way. Your faith has made you well." He could see!

Mark 10 · Grade 4

Receiving Like a Child

Name Date

Read and Think

Pharisees tested Jesus about divorce. He pointed back to creation: God made them male and female, and the two become one flesh; what God has joined, let no one separate. When people brought children to Jesus, the disciples rebuked them, and Jesus was indignant. Whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child will not enter it. He took them in His arms and blessed them.

A rich man knelt and asked what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "One thing you lack." He told him to sell all, give to the poor, and follow Him. The man left sad. Jesus said it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom, yet all things are possible with God.

Jesus predicted His death and resurrection a third time. James and John asked to sit at His right and left in glory. Jesus said whoever wants to be great must be a servant, "For the Son of Man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." At Jericho, blind Bartimaeus called out to Jesus, received his sight, and followed Him on the way.

Mark 10 · Grade 5

A Ransom for Many

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 10 continues Jesus' journey to Jerusalem and His teaching on discipleship. On marriage, Jesus moves beyond legal debates to God's purpose in creation. On children, He corrects disciples who thought them unimportant: the Kingdom belongs to those who receive it as a gift, with nothing to offer.

The rich man is the opposite of a child. He came asking what he must do, confident in his obedience. Jesus loved him and exposed the one thing he lacked: his wealth held his heart. The disciples were astonished because they assumed riches signaled God's favor. Jesus taught that salvation is impossible for humans but possible with God. Those who leave all for Him receive far more, with persecutions, and eternal life.

The third passion prediction is followed by the most glaring misunderstanding: James and John's request for glory. Jesus answers with Mark's key verse: the Son of Man came to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many, echoing Isaiah 53's suffering servant. Bartimaeus closes the section. A blind beggar sees what the disciples struggled to see, calls Jesus "son of David," and follows Him on the way to Jerusalem.

  1. Why are children a model for receiving the Kingdom?

  2. How is the rich man the opposite of a child?

  3. What did Jesus promise along with blessings to those who leave all for Him?

  4. What Old Testament passage does Mark 10:45 echo?

  5. How does Bartimaeus close the section on discipleship?
