Mark 10 · Grade 5

A Ransom for Many

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark 10 continues Jesus' journey to Jerusalem and His teaching on discipleship. On marriage, Jesus moves beyond legal debates to God's purpose in creation. On children, He corrects disciples who thought them unimportant: the Kingdom belongs to those who receive it as a gift, with nothing to offer.

The rich man is the opposite of a child. He came asking what he must do, confident in his obedience. Jesus loved him and exposed the one thing he lacked: his wealth held his heart. The disciples were astonished because they assumed riches signaled God's favor. Jesus taught that salvation is impossible for humans but possible with God. Those who leave all for Him receive far more, with persecutions, and eternal life.

The third passion prediction is followed by the most glaring misunderstanding: James and John's request for glory. Jesus answers with Mark's key verse: the Son of Man came to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many, echoing Isaiah 53's suffering servant. Bartimaeus closes the section. A blind beggar sees what the disciples struggled to see, calls Jesus "son of David," and follows Him on the way to Jerusalem.
