Mark 1 · Grade 3

Jesus Begins His Work

Name Date

Read the Story

John the Baptist preached in the wilderness. Then Jesus came and was baptized by John in the Jordan River. Coming up from the water, Jesus saw the Spirit coming down on Him like a dove. A voice from the sky said, "You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

Jesus called four fishermen to follow Him. In the town of Capernaum, He taught in the synagogue, and people were amazed, because He taught with authority. He healed Simon's mother-in-law of a fever. That evening the whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who were sick.

Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus went to a quiet place to pray. Then He went to other towns to preach. A man with leprosy begged for help. Jesus felt compassion. He touched the man and said, "I want to. Be made clean." The man was healed!

Mark 1 · Grade 4

Immediately

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark's Gospel is short and fast-moving; one of its favorite words is "immediately." It opens: "The beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Son of God." John the Baptist fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy as a voice crying in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance. He said one mightier than he was coming, who would baptize with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was baptized, the Spirit came on Him like a dove, and the Father declared Him His beloved Son. The Spirit drove Him into the wilderness for forty days, where Satan tempted Him. Then Jesus began preaching: "The time is fulfilled, and God's Kingdom is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News." He called Simon, Andrew, James and John, and they left their nets to follow.

In Capernaum, Jesus taught with authority and set a man free from an unclean spirit. He healed Peter's mother-in-law and many others. Early the next morning He went out alone to pray. A man with leprosy said, "If you want to, you can make me clean." Moved with compassion, Jesus touched him and healed him.

Mark 1 · Grade 5

The Authority of the Son

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark wastes no time. In one verse he names Jesus as Christ and Son of God; the rest of the book shows why. Mark combines prophecies from Malachi and Isaiah to present John as the messenger preparing the Lord's way. John's simple life and call to repentance stirred all Judea, yet he pointed away from himself to the one who would baptize with the Spirit.

At the baptism, the heavens were torn open, the Spirit descended, and the Father spoke. Father, Son and Spirit are all present. Immediately the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness, where He was tempted forty days, with the wild animals, and angels served Him. Jesus then announced that the Kingdom had come near, calling for repentance and faith.

Mark's first chapter shows Jesus' authority over everything: in calling disciples, who leave all immediately; in teaching, unlike the scribes; over unclean spirits, which obey Him; over disease; and over the defilement of leprosy. Yet His power is joined to compassion and prayer. He seeks His Father in a lonely place and refuses to stay where He is popular, because He came to preach the gospel in other towns too.
