Mark 1 · Grade 5

The Authority of the Son

Name Date

Read and Think

Mark wastes no time. In one verse he names Jesus as Christ and Son of God; the rest of the book shows why. Mark combines prophecies from Malachi and Isaiah to present John as the messenger preparing the Lord's way. John's simple life and call to repentance stirred all Judea, yet he pointed away from himself to the one who would baptize with the Spirit.

At the baptism, the heavens were torn open, the Spirit descended, and the Father spoke. Father, Son and Spirit are all present. Immediately the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness, where He was tempted forty days, with the wild animals, and angels served Him. Jesus then announced that the Kingdom had come near, calling for repentance and faith.

Mark's first chapter shows Jesus' authority over everything: in calling disciples, who leave all immediately; in teaching, unlike the scribes; over unclean spirits, which obey Him; over disease; and over the defilement of leprosy. Yet His power is joined to compassion and prayer. He seeks His Father in a lonely place and refuses to stay where He is popular, because He came to preach the gospel in other towns too.
