You Are the Christ

Read the Story

Jesus gave the twelve power to heal and sent them to preach God's Kingdom. When they came back, a crowd of about five thousand men followed Jesus. With only five loaves and two fish, Jesus blessed the food, and everyone ate until they were full. Twelve baskets of pieces were left.

Later Jesus asked His disciples who people said He was. Then He asked, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered that He was the Christ of God. Jesus said that anyone who wants to follow Him must deny himself and take up his cross daily.

Jesus took Peter, James and John up a mountain to pray. His face changed, and His clothes became bright white. Moses and Elijah talked with Him. A cloud came, and a voice said, This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

Luke 9 · Grade 4

Following the Christ

Name Date

Read and Think

Jesus sent the twelve apostles out with power to heal and to preach God's Kingdom. They were to trust God for what they needed. Even King Herod heard about Jesus and wondered who He was. When the apostles returned, a great crowd followed Jesus. Late in the day, there were five loaves and two fish. Jesus blessed them and broke them, and more than five thousand people were fed. Twelve baskets were left over.

Then Jesus asked His disciples, Who do you say that I am? Peter answered, The Christ of God. Jesus explained that He would suffer, be killed, and be raised on the third day. Following Him means saying no to ourselves, taking up our cross daily, and following Him.

About eight days later, on a mountain, Jesus' face shone and His clothes became dazzling white. Moses and Elijah spoke with Him about His departure in Jerusalem. The Father spoke from a cloud and said to listen to His Son. Later the disciples argued about who was greatest. Jesus put a little child beside Him and said the least among them is great.

Luke 9 · Grade 5

The Christ of God

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 9 keeps asking one question: who is Jesus? Herod wondered about it when he heard what Jesus was doing. The crowds saw the answer when Jesus took five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven, blessed them, and fed more than five thousand people. Like God fed Israel with manna in the wilderness, Jesus provided for His people, and there were twelve baskets left.

Then Jesus asked His disciples directly. Peter answered, The Christ of God. Jesus explained what kind of Christ He would be: He would suffer, be rejected, be killed, and be raised on the third day. He taught that whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Jesus' sake will save it. Following Jesus is a daily choice.

On the mountain, Peter, James and John saw a glimpse of Jesus' glory. Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets, spoke with Him about the departure He would accomplish in Jerusalem. The Father said, This is my beloved Son. Listen to him! At the end of the chapter, Jesus set His face to go to Jerusalem. He warned that following Him must come before every other comfort.

Show What You Know

  1. How is the feeding of the five thousand like something from Israel's history?

  2. What kind of Christ did Jesus say He would be?

  3. What did Jesus teach about saving and losing your life?

  4. Whom might Moses and Elijah represent?

  5. What did the Father command the disciples?
