Good News for the Poor

Name Date

Read the Story

The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness for forty days. The devil tempted Him three times. He said to turn a stone into bread. He offered all the kingdoms of the world. He said to jump from the temple. Each time Jesus answered with Scripture. He did not give in.

In Nazareth, Jesus stood up in the synagogue. He read from Isaiah about good news for the poor and freedom for captives. Then He said this Scripture was fulfilled that day. Some people became angry. They did not believe Him and tried to hurt Him. But Jesus walked right through the crowd and went away.

In Capernaum, people were amazed at His teaching. Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law of a fever. At sunset, many sick people came. Jesus laid His hands on each one and healed them.

Memory Verse

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed,

Jesus Stands Strong

Name Date

Read and Think

After His baptism, Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit led Him into the wilderness. There He ate nothing for forty days. The devil came to tempt Him. First he told Jesus to turn a stone into bread. Then he offered Jesus the world's kingdoms if He would worship him. Last he told Jesus to throw Himself down from the temple.

Each time, Jesus answered with words from Deuteronomy. People need God's Word, not just bread. We must worship God alone. And we must not test God. The devil left Him. Jesus shows us how to fight temptation with Scripture.

Back in Nazareth, Jesus read Isaiah's promise in the synagogue. He said it was coming true in Him. When He said God cares for outsiders too, the crowd grew angry. They tried to throw Him off a cliff, but He passed through them. In Capernaum, Jesus taught with authority. He cast out evil spirits and healed many people. Then He went on to preach in other towns.

  1. Who led Jesus into the wilderness?

Luke 4 · Grade 5

The Spirit of the Lord Is on Me

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 4 begins with a test. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, spent forty days in the wilderness. The devil tempted Him three times. He used hunger, power and even Bible verses twisted out of place. Jesus answered each one with Scripture from Deuteronomy. Where Israel failed in the wilderness long ago, Jesus stayed faithful. He is the obedient Son.

In the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus read from Isaiah. The passage spoke of good news for the poor, release for captives, sight for the blind and freedom for the oppressed. Then He said, Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled. He was claiming to be the promised One. He reminded them that God once helped a widow in Sidon and a man from Syria. The crowd was furious. They drove Him to the edge of a cliff, but He passed through them, because His time had not yet come.

In Capernaum, people were astonished, for His word had authority. Even evil spirits obeyed Him and knew He was the Holy One of God. He healed Simon's mother-in-law, and she got up and served them. At sunset He healed many. The next day the crowds wanted Him to stay. But He said He must preach the good news of God's Kingdom to other cities too, because that is why He was sent.

Show What You Know

  1. How is Jesus' faithfulness in the wilderness different from Israel's?

  2. What four things did the Isaiah passage promise?

  3. What was Jesus claiming when He said the Scripture was fulfilled?

  4. Why did the people of Nazareth become furious?

  5. Why did Jesus leave Capernaum when the crowds wanted Him to stay?
