Luke 3 · Grade 5
The Voice in the Wilderness
Read and Think
Luke carefully places John's ministry in history, naming Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate, Herod and the high priests. Then he says the word of God came to John in the wilderness. For centuries, God's people had waited to hear from Him again. John fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy of a voice crying in the wilderness. He was making the path straight for the Lord, so all flesh would see God's salvation.
John's message was urgent. He warned the crowds not to trust in their family line. God could raise up children for Abraham from stones. True repentance shows itself in fruit: generosity, honesty and contentment. He told the crowds to share. Tax collectors should collect no more than was fair. Soldiers should not accuse anyone falsely. Repentance was not only feeling sorry; it changed how people treated others.
The people wondered whether John was the Christ. He said One more powerful was coming. That One would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. Herod later put John in prison for speaking the truth. Then Luke describes Jesus' baptism. As Jesus prayed, heaven opened. The Spirit came down like a dove, and the Father said, You are my beloved Son. In this scene we see the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit together. The family line that follows reaches back to Adam, showing that Jesus came for all people.
