Luke 3 · Grade 4

Prepare the Way of the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke tells us exactly when John began to preach: in the fifteenth year of the emperor Tiberius. God's word came to John in the wilderness. He went all around the Jordan River. He called people to be baptized as a sign that they were turning from sin to be forgiven. Isaiah had foretold a voice in the wilderness preparing the way of the Lord. He promised that all flesh would see God's salvation.

John spoke boldly. He warned that being Abraham's children was not enough. People needed changed lives, like a tree that bears good fruit. People asked what they should do. His answers were practical. Share your clothes and food. Collect only what is fair. Do not take money by force. Be content with your pay.

John pointed away from himself to Jesus, saying he was not worthy to untie His sandals. When Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit came upon Him like a dove. The Father spoke from heaven and called Him His beloved Son. Luke ends the chapter by tracing Jesus' family line all the way back to Adam.

Take It Home

For families: talk about these together.

  • John told people how to live fairly in their everyday jobs. What would that look like at home, at church, or with friends?
  • God spoke from heaven when Jesus was baptized. What does that show about Jesus?
  • How can you handle praise without taking credit God deserves?
