The Lord Is Risen Indeed

Name Date

Read the Story

Early on the first day of the week, women brought spices to the tomb. The stone was rolled away, and Jesus' body was gone. Two men in dazzling clothes asked why they looked for the living among the dead. He isn't here, but is risen! The women told the apostles, and Peter ran to see the empty tomb.

That day, two disciples walked to a village called Emmaus. Jesus joined them, but they did not recognize Him. He explained from Moses and the Prophets what the Scriptures said about Him. At supper, He broke the bread, and their eyes were opened. They hurried back to Jerusalem and heard that the Lord is risen indeed.

Jesus stood among the disciples and said, Peace be to you. He showed His hands and feet and ate fish to prove He was alive. He told them they were witnesses. Then He blessed them and was carried up into heaven. They worshiped Him with great joy.

Our Hearts Burned

Name Date

Read and Think

On Sunday morning, the women who had followed Jesus came to the tomb with spices. They found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. Two angels reminded them that Jesus had said He would be crucified and rise on the third day. They remembered His words and told the apostles. At first, the apostles thought it was nonsense, but Peter ran to the tomb and wondered at what he saw.

Two sad disciples walked toward Emmaus. Jesus came near, but their eyes were kept from knowing Him. They said they had hoped Jesus would redeem Israel. Jesus showed them from all the Scriptures that the Christ had to suffer and then enter His glory. At supper He broke bread, and they recognized Him. They said their hearts burned while He opened the Scriptures.

Jesus appeared to the eleven. They were afraid, thinking He was a ghost. He showed His wounds and ate a piece of fish. He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. Repentance and forgiveness would be preached in His name to all nations. He promised power from on high. Near Bethany He blessed them and rose to heaven.

Witnesses of These Things

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 24 is the joyful end of Luke's Gospel. Women came to the tomb on the first day of the week and found it empty. Two men in shining clothes said, Why do you seek the living among the dead? He isn't here, but is risen. The women remembered His words and became the first to announce the resurrection. Peter ran to the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying by themselves.

On the road to Emmaus, two discouraged disciples met a stranger. They told Him their hopes had died with Jesus. The stranger, Jesus Himself, called them slow of heart to believe the prophets. Beginning from Moses and all the prophets, He explained the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. When He broke bread with them, their eyes were opened. They raced back to Jerusalem and heard, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!

Then Jesus stood among the disciples. He showed His hands and feet, and He ate broiled fish in front of them. He was not a spirit, but truly raised in a body. He opened their minds to see that the Law, the Prophets and the Psalms all pointed to Him. The Christ had to suffer and rise on the third day. Repentance and forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed to all nations, and they were witnesses of these things. Jesus promised to send what the Father had promised. Then He was carried up into heaven, and they returned to Jerusalem with great joy, continually praising God.
