Stand Firm

Read the Story

Jesus saw rich people putting gifts in the temple treasury. Then a poor widow put in two small coins. Jesus said this poor widow put in more than all of them. They gave out of their extra, but she gave all she had to live on.

Some people admired the temple's beautiful stones. Jesus said a day would come when not one stone would be left on another. He warned that many would come falsely in His name. There would be wars, earthquakes and troubles. His followers might be treated badly. But He promised to give them words and wisdom. By standing firm, they would gain their lives.

Jesus said He would come in a cloud with power and great glory. Like leaves on a fig tree show summer is near, signs show His coming is near. He told them to watch and pray.

Read and Think

Luke 21 begins with a lesson about giving. Rich people put large gifts into the temple box. A poor widow gave two small copper coins. Jesus said she gave more than everyone else, because she gave all she had. God sees the heart behind a gift, not just the amount.

When people praised the temple's beauty, Jesus said it would be torn down. The disciples asked when. Jesus warned them not to be fooled by false teachers or frightened by wars and disasters. His followers would be arrested and even betrayed by family. Yet not a hair of their head would perish without God's care, and their endurance would show their faith. Jerusalem would be surrounded by armies, and they should flee.

Jesus also spoke of the end of the age. There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. Then people will see the Son of Man coming with power and great glory. When these things begin, His followers should look up, because their redemption is near. Heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will not. So they should stay alert and pray.

Luke 21 · Grade 5

My Words Will Not Pass Away

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 21 contrasts what lasts with what does not. The rich gave from their abundance, but a poor widow gave her whole living, two small coins. To human eyes her gift was tiny. To Jesus it was the greatest gift that day, because it showed total trust in God.

The temple was magnificent, adorned with beautiful stones and gifts. Yet Jesus said it would be thrown down, which happened in A.D. 70, about forty years later. He told His followers not to be led astray by false messiahs or terrified by wars, earthquakes and famines. They would face persecution and be brought before kings and governors. This would become an opportunity to testify. Jesus promised to give them a mouth and wisdom that their opponents could not resist.

Jesus then lifted their eyes to His return. The nations will be in distress, but the Son of Man will come in a cloud with power and great glory. Like a fig tree putting out leaves, the signs would show God's Kingdom is near. Heaven and earth will pass away, but Jesus' words will by no means pass away. So He warned His followers not to let their hearts be weighed down by worldly cares. Instead, watch and pray at all times. Each day Jesus taught in the temple, and at night He stayed on the Mount of Olives.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was the widow's tiny gift the greatest gift that day?

  2. When was the temple destroyed?

  3. How could persecution become an opportunity?

  4. What does the fig tree example teach?
