God of the Living

Name Date

Read the Story

The chief priests asked Jesus who gave Him authority. Jesus asked them whether John's baptism was from heaven or from men. They would not answer, so Jesus did not tell them either.

Jesus told a parable. A man planted a vineyard and rented it to farmers. He sent servants to collect fruit, but the farmers beat them. Finally he sent his beloved son, and they killed him. Jesus said the owner would give the vineyard to others. He said the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

Spies asked about paying taxes to Caesar. Jesus said to give Caesar what is Caesar's and God what is God's. Others asked about life after death. Jesus said God is the God of the living, for all are alive to Him.

Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him.”

Tested in the Temple

Name Date

Read and Think

During His last days in Jerusalem, Jesus taught in the temple. Religious leaders challenged His authority. Jesus answered with a question about John the Baptist. They were afraid to answer, so they said they did not know.

Then Jesus told about tenant farmers in a vineyard who refused to give the owner his share. They beat his servants and killed his beloved son. The vineyard owner stands for God, and the son stands for Jesus. The leaders realized He was speaking about them.

Spies tried to trap Him with a question about taxes. If He said no, Rome would arrest Him. If He said yes, the people might turn against Him. Jesus looked at a coin with Caesar's image and said to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God. Some Sadducees, who did not believe in the resurrection, asked a tricky question. Jesus said God is the God of the living. He warned people to beware of leaders who show off.

  1. Why did the leaders say they did not know where John's baptism came from?

  2. Who do the vineyard owner and his son stand for?

Luke 20 · Grade 5

The Rejected Stone

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 20 records a series of tests. The chief priests, scribes and elders demanded to know by what authority Jesus acted. Jesus asked whether John's baptism was from heaven or from men. They feared both answers, so they gave none. Jesus' question exposed that their problem was not a lack of evidence but an unwillingness to submit to God.

In the parable of the vineyard, the owner sent servant after servant, and finally his beloved son. The tenants killed the son, hoping to take the inheritance. Jesus quoted Psalm 118: the stone which the builders rejected became the chief cornerstone. Israel's leaders would reject Jesus, but God would make Him the foundation of His people.

Spies asked if it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. Jesus said to give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. Coins bear Caesar's image, but people bear God's image, so we owe our whole selves to God. The Sadducees then mocked the resurrection with a story of seven brothers. Jesus explained that resurrection life is different from this life. Moses called God the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, so He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. Finally, Jesus asked how the Christ can be both David's son and David's Lord.
