Luke 2 shows that God works through history. A decree from Caesar Augustus, the most powerful ruler in the world, moved Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem at exactly the right time, so that the promised Son of David was born in David's town. The King of kings arrived not in a palace but in a humble place, and was laid in a manger.
The first people to hear were shepherds. An angel announced good news of great joy for all the people: a Savior, Christ the Lord. Then a multitude of angels praised God, giving Him glory and announcing peace on earth. The shepherds went at once, found everything just as they had been told, and returned glorifying and praising God. Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.
When Jesus was presented at the temple, Simeon, who had been waiting for God's promise, took Him in his arms. He praised God that his eyes had seen God's salvation, a light for the nations and glory for Israel. Anna, an elderly prophet, gave thanks and spoke about Jesus to everyone waiting for redemption. At twelve, Jesus amazed the teachers with His understanding and told His parents that He must be in His Father's house. Even as a boy, Jesus knew who His true Father was.
