The Savior Has Come

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke tells the Christmas story with real places and rulers. Caesar Augustus ordered a census, so Joseph traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem with Mary. Bethlehem was the city of David, and the prophets had said a great King would come from David's family. There Jesus was born and laid in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn.

God did not announce the birth to kings first. He sent an angel to shepherds, ordinary workers in the fields. The angel said a Savior had been born, who is Christ the Lord, and that they would find Him wrapped in cloth and lying in a manger. A great crowd of angels praised God. The shepherds went quickly, found Jesus, and spread the news. Mary treasured all these things in her heart.

In the temple, an old man named Simeon held Jesus and praised God, saying his eyes had seen God's salvation. The prophet Anna thanked God too. Years later, twelve-year-old Jesus stayed behind in the temple. When His worried parents found Him, He said He had to be in His Father's house. Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and people.
