Where Are the Nine?

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus said that if a brother sins and repents, we should forgive him, even seven times in a day. The apostles asked Jesus to increase their faith. Jesus said even faith as small as a mustard seed can do great things, because of the great God we trust.

On the way to Jerusalem, ten men with leprosy stood far off. They lifted their voices and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us! Jesus told them to show themselves to the priests. As they went, they were cleansed.

One of them, a Samaritan, turned back. He praised God loudly and fell at Jesus' feet, giving thanks. Jesus asked if ten were not cleansed. Where were the nine? He told the man to get up and go, because his faith had made him well.

Memory Verse

They lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”

A Thankful Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Jesus warned His disciples never to cause others to stumble into sin. He also taught them to forgive. If a brother repents seven times in one day, forgive him every time. That felt hard, so the apostles asked for more faith. Jesus said that even tiny faith in a mighty God is enough. He reminded them that serving God is our duty, not a way to earn praise.

As Jesus traveled, ten men with leprosy called to Him from a distance. Leprosy kept people apart from their families and towns. Jesus sent them to the priests, who could declare them clean. As they obeyed, they were healed. But only one came back, praising God and thanking Jesus. He was a Samaritan, an outsider. Jesus asked where the other nine were.

When the Pharisees asked when God's Kingdom would come, Jesus said it was already among them. He warned that He would return suddenly, like lightning across the sky. People should be ready, not like those in Noah's day or Lot's day who ignored God.

Luke 17 · Grade 5

Faith That Gives Thanks

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 17 teaches about the everyday faith of a disciple. Jesus warned that causing a little one to sin is very serious. He told His followers to rebuke a brother who sins and to forgive him when he repents, even seven times in a day. The apostles responded, Increase our faith. Jesus explained that faith like a mustard seed is powerful, because what matters is the One we trust. He also said that after doing all we are told, we should say we are unworthy servants who have only done our duty.

On the border between Samaria and Galilee, ten lepers cried out for mercy. Jesus told them to go to the priests, and they were cleansed on the way. All ten received healing, but only one turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice. He fell on his face at Jesus' feet. Jesus noted that this thankful man was a foreigner. He said, Your faith has healed you. The man received more than healing. He received a relationship with Jesus.

The chapter ends with Jesus teaching about the Kingdom. It was already present among them in Jesus Himself. Yet the Son of Man would come again in a day of judgment, as sudden as the flood in Noah's day. He told them to remember Lot's wife, who looked back. Jesus' followers must not cling to this world but be ready for Him.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Jesus say about faith like a mustard seed?

  2. What attitude should servants of God have after obeying?

  3. What did the thankful man receive beyond healing?

  4. Why did Jesus say to remember Lot's wife?

  5. Where was the Kingdom already present?
