Joy in Heaven

Name Date

Read the Story

Tax collectors and sinners came to listen to Jesus. The Pharisees grumbled that He welcomed sinners and ate with them. So Jesus told three stories.

A shepherd left ninety-nine sheep to find one that was lost. When he found it, he carried it on his shoulders and called his friends to celebrate. A woman lost one of her ten silver coins. She swept until she found it, and then she rejoiced. Jesus said there is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents.

A younger son took his share of money and wasted it far away. When he was starving and feeding pigs, he came to his senses. He went home to ask to be a servant. But his father ran to him, hugged him, and gave him a robe, a ring and a feast. The older brother was angry, but the father said they had to celebrate.

The Lost Son

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 15 begins with a problem. Sinners were coming close to hear Jesus, and the religious leaders complained. Jesus answered with three stories about lost things. In each one, someone searches, finds, and celebrates.

The shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to look for one lost sheep. The woman lights a lamp and sweeps her house for one lost coin. When they find what was lost, they call their friends to rejoice. Jesus said heaven rejoices like that over one sinner who repents.

The third story is about two sons. The younger son demanded his share, left home, and wasted it. When a famine came, he fed pigs and longed to eat their food. He came to his senses and went home to confess. While he was still far off, his father saw him, felt compassion, and ran to him. The father gave him the best robe, a ring and sandals. The older son refused to join the party. The father gently invited him in, because his brother was dead and is alive again.

Luke 15 · Grade 5

The Father's Welcome

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 15 shows the heart of God. Tax collectors and sinners drew near to Jesus, and the Pharisees grumbled. Jesus did not defend Himself with an argument. He told three parables that show what God is like. God is the one who seeks the lost.

A shepherd who loses one sheep leaves the ninety-nine to search until he finds it. A woman who loses one silver coin lights a lamp and sweeps carefully until she finds it. Both call friends to rejoice. Jesus explained that there is joy in the presence of God's angels over one sinner who repents.

In the third parable, a younger son dishonored his father by demanding his inheritance and wasting it in reckless living. Hungry and feeding pigs, he came to himself and planned to say he was no longer worthy to be called a son. But the father ran, embraced him, and restored him with a robe, a ring, sandals and a feast. The older son stayed outside, angry, sure he had earned more. The father loved him too, and pleaded with him to come in. The story ends without saying what the older son chose. Jesus left that question for the grumbling Pharisees, and for us.

Show What You Know

  1. What do all three parables show about God?

  2. What was the younger son planning to say to his father?

  3. How did the father restore the son?

  4. Whom does the older son represent in the setting of this chapter?

  5. The story ends before we hear the older brother's answer. What question does that leave for us?
